Each Wanderer deck focuses on a specific topic
Wanderer specializes in making playing cards and material intended to educate consumers on a certain topic. The idea behind the unique decks is to create a learning experience through playing cards. Each deck wanders on to a different theme and contains 52 different illustrations, one for each card. Topics for decks can range from animals found in North America to Greek mythology. Wanderer aims to provide casual learning for people who own a Wanderer Deck.
I started Wanderer when I was a senior in college pursuing my bachelors degree in graphic design. As an Illustrator and designer I enjoy making illustration series. I also cherish playing cards, something that is rather sacred in my family. Combining my love for these has created Wanderer. Each Wanderer Deck has a different, unique illustration style.
Just like each topic for a Wanderer deck, the illustration style for each deck is completely different. Each deck establishes a traditional playing card look while maintaining a style as unique as the topic for each deck. In each Wanderer deck there are at least 52 different illustrations, one for each card in a normal poker deck. Each of the 52 different cards tells a completely different story as unique as the illustration found on the card. Each Wanderer deck also has a component that details the stories behind the illustrations found on each card. These components could be anything from a book to a interactive website.
Each Wanderer deck has a companion piece that details the story behind each card in the deck.
The passive goal behind each deck is to educate the owner of a Wanderer deck on the topic of the deck. Do we expect owners of these decks to become experts on the topic? No, at best you come away with a different view of the world at worst you say “Hey, I learned something today!” We facilitate this passive education through different mediums like books that detail the story of each card or websites that serve as a interactive, educational experience.
